FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Yoga is at least a 5,000-year-old tradition, making it challenging to distill into a simple definition due to its broad scope and varied meanings.
According to ancient texts, yoga is a holistic practice that allows us to control the mind and senses, leading to enlightenment, self-realization, and union with higher consciousness. It aims to unite mind, body, and spirit.
We can also view “yoga” as both a noun and a verb.
As a verb, it means to yoke, harness, or control, referring to our attention, mind, and senses.
As a noun, yoga signifies union, liberation, and oneness, referring to transcending ego and experiencing interconnectedness.
In essence, yoga is a discipline that allows us to investigate the nature of existence by starting with mind, body, and breath. The aims may vary, but ultimately, it leads to profound peace, wisdom, and liberation.
Unlike contemporary yoga, which focuses mainly on physical postures (asanas), traditional yoga delves deeper. It has a potential to rewire your brain and influence your entire nervous system.
Benefits often include increased energy, reduced anxiety, improved focus, better sleep, and stronger cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Many report an overall improvement in quality of life. We encourage you to explore and experience these benefits for yourself.
Traditional yoga including pranayama can be practiced by every healthy individual. When practiced correctly, it promotes optimal health, a peaceful and steady mind, and a strong, radiant body free from disease.
However, certain yoga techniques can affect the body’s physiology. If you have specific health conditions, please exercise caution and consult us before practicing:
· Cardiovascular diseases (severe heart conditions or high blood pressure)
· A history of heart failure or stroke
· Severe respiratory disorders (asthma or COPD)
· Severe anxiety or panic attacks
· Epilepsy
· Glaucoma
· Hernia
· Shortly after an operation
For those with these conditions, we strongly recommend signing up for 1-on-1 classes tailored to your health profile.
Practicing yoga during pregnancy can be highly beneficial, but it’s crucial to prioritize safety for both mother and baby.
We recommend avoiding any of the following practices:
· Deep twists
· Strong backbends
· Prone postures
· Inversions
· Balancing poses
· Kapalabhati (skull Shining Breath)
· Bhastrika (bellows Breath)
· Kumbhaka (breath Retention)
· All bandhas (energy locks)
Always consult your healthcare professional and work with a qualified yoga instructor to ensure a safe practice.
To reap the maximum benefits from yoga, consistency is key. Regular practice, even if brief, is more effective than infrequent, intensive sessions.
The ideal frequency depends on your schedule and goals. We recommend at least 20 minutes daily, ideally in the morning. If you have more time and want to advance quickly, 60 minutes twice a day can lead to profound shifts in body and mind.
Traditional yoga goes beyond the mat, seamlessly integrating into daily life. It improves mindfulness, decision-making, stress management and overall happiness. The key is to access the wisdom of yogic teachings throughout your day to day activities.
To ensure safety and reap the maximum benefits of traditional yoga, we recommend following these general guidelines:
· Practice with respect: avoid pushing beyond your current capabilities
· Progress gradually: maintain smooth, even breathing without stops or jerks
· Choose a good place: practice in a clean, warm, quiet, and well-ventilated area
· Time of practice: aim for sunrise or sunset; morning practice upon waking is best
· Empty stomach: eat 3-4 hours before your practice; you can eat 30 minutes after your session
As always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask your teacher
